National Night Out Event - Tuesday August 3rd, 2010
On Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010, MetroWest Master Association celebrated their 3rd Annual Neighborhood Watch National Night Out (NNO).
NNO is a program that brings awareness to crime and drug prevention in communities nationwide. 2010 marks the 27th year that the program has been in place and neighborhoods across all fifty states are now taking part.
A Social Events Committee headed by Julie Sanchez, Jessica Coleman, and Beth Heffernan-Monaco began the planning of this year’s event back in February. Julie ensured that the event was registered as an “officially sanctioned NNO party,” as well as completed applications for a grant from the Neighborhood Watch Program and to have the party officially judged. Thanks to her efforts, MetroWest Master Association was awarded a grant and also won 3rd place out of 70 community parties in all of Orlando. As one of the winners of the night, MetroWest had the pleasure of being visited by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Chief of Police Val Demings, and Commissioner Samuel Ings for the MW district and the Fire Chief.
In addition, the MetroWest Master Association is teaming up with the City of Orlando Police Department on a new camera project called IRIS (Innovative Response to Improve Safety). This is the first partnership of its kind in Orlando, and Chief of Police Val Demings made the public announcement of that partnership at the event with all of the major Orlando media present.
It was estimated that there were over 300 people in attendance and the event was considered a huge success by the residents who attended.
Long time MetroWest resident Kim Jackson wrote:
“Julie and the TCG group, you guys did an outstanding job on NNO. It was one of the best events we have had. Also, the volunteers/committees did a fantastic job. The highlight of the evening was to see the media and to see the positive comments from the local news.”
“… as a resident of MW, I appreciate your hard work and the positive exposure that last night’s event helped us gain.”
